Information

-Synopsis

After suffering dramatic set backs in their personal lives, three close friends who are among the world’s best professional climbers battle their
complicated pasts, inner demons and nature’s harshest elements in an attempt to confront the Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru, the most technically
complicated and dangerous peak in the Himalayas. Meru is the story of their journey, an expedition to impossible new heights.

-Program Note

Meru is known as one of the most difficult and dangerous peak in the Himalayas. Especially the vertical wall Shark’s Fin requires every climbing skill including high altitude climbing, ice climbing and rock climbing, so no one has reached the top yet. In 2008, three American climbers challenged Meru. Conrad ANKER in his fifties wanted to fulfill the dream that his mentor Dugs STUMP never accomplished, so he starts climbing with his younger partners Jimmy CHIN and Renan OZTURK. They almost reach the top after 17 days of climbing, but they are forced to turn back due to worsening of weather. They come back to the mountain three years later. Renan meets a crisis due to a stroke, but they are willing to go on. Through the film, we can see why they cannot stop life risking climbing and not only just climbing skills but also authentic alpinism is instructed from seniors to juniors. A strong connection over generation leaves a heavy echo like Meru.
